Storm grapplers compete at Luther, Iowa State over the weekend

The Simpson wrestling team had a busy first weekend of the 2015-16 season, competing in the Luther Open on Saturday and the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open on Sunday.

SUNDAY RECAP - The Storm faced stiff competition in Ames on Sunday, including a strong contingent of Division I wrestlers. Nine Storm wrestlers took part in the tournament.

Colby Vlieger had the best day for the Storm, going 3-1 on the backside of the 285-pound bracket after losing the opener. He scored a 12-5 decision over Luke Destiche (Minnesota) before pinning Luke Petersen (Neb. Kearney) in 48 seconds. He bowed out of the tournament with an 8-4 loss in the consolation semifinals.

Shane Swank and Spencer Ward also earned wins on the backside of the bracket. Swank pinned teammate Bryce Wignall in the 165-pound bracket and Ward earned a second-period pin over Jose Cortez (Pratt CC).

SATURDAY RECAP - Head coach Nate Hansen had six freshmen and one sophomore gain experience by competing in the Silver Division at the Luther Open in Decorah on Saturday.

DeVaughn Scott took third place in the 197-pound bracket to lead three placewinners. RJ Brown placed fifth at 165 and Damon Piatt came in sixth at 174.

Scott earned a pair of pins on the way to the consolation championship, going 4-1 on the day. Brown went 4-2 and Piatt went 3-3.
