Women’s golf concludes final tune-up before conference

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Lydia Martin enjoyed her best round of the season and the Simpson women's golf team rose to a third-place finish at the 36-hole Buena Vista Invitational, which concluded Saturday.

The meet marks the final competition before Simpson opens the 72-hole American Rivers Conference Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

The Storm shaved 19 strokes in the second round, shooting 369-350-719 to finish 11 behind second-place Dordt and eight in front of host Buena Vista. Grand View won the team championship (324-332-656).

Martin fired a 10-over 81 in the second round to place seventh in the field of 35 golfers. She used a strong back-nine to cut 11 strokes from her first round 92, making par on each of the final five holes. Martin finished the day with 10 pars, including six on the back.

Kelsa Berkland, Emily Jansen and Madison Hance all registered top-15 finishes. Berkland closed the tournament with a 91 to tie for 12th with Jansen, who carded a 99 after shooting a team-low 82 in the opening round. Hance had Simpson's second-lowest round, firing an 85.

Kelsey Poppe landed in the top 20 after closing the weekend with 97. Haley Booton and Megan Crockett rounded out the Storm's finishers.
