Women’s golf ties for ninth in season-opening round

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Simpson women's golf team opened up its season on Friday with the Luther Sail Classic at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, tying for ninth in the 12-team field after one round of play.

The Storm shot a combined 374 at the par-72, 5,877 yard course, finishing 86 strokes back of first-place Wartburg College who shot eight over par.
Sophomore Courtney Mabeus was Simpson's best performer, and will go into Saturday tied for 26th in the 67 golfer field with an 88. Wartburg's Brooke Klostermann sits at the head of the pack after shooting an even 72. 

Junior Coltyn Hunter was the only other Storm golfer in the top 40, shooting a 91, tying her for 40th.

Simpson's Lydia Martin tied for 43rd with a 92, Kelsa Berkland shot a 95 to tie for 47th, Maddie Berkley shot an even 100 to tie for 54th while sophomore Kelsey Van Veen was one shot behind Berkley with a 103.

The Storm will tee off for the second and final round of the Sail Classic at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.
