Storm can’t capitalize on opportunities in 2-1 loss to Whitewater

INDIANOLA, Iowa — The Simpson men's soccer team generated several scoring chances but couldn't find the equalizer in the second half, falling to Wis.-Whitewater 2-1 on Monday.

Simpson put 13 shots on goal -- including one off the post in the closing minutes -- but could only come away with one goal in the loss. Monday marked Simpson's third straight game against a nationally-or-regionally ranked opponent.

An early goal off a header from 6-foot-8 Justin Stanko gave Whitewater the lead in the seventh minute. Simpson answered in the 35th minute when Donevan Roe went far post on a right-footed strike off a perfect volley by Garrett Pochop.

The Warhawks (7-3-2) scored the eventual game-winner on a header by Dylan Hottsmith in the 71st minute, capitalizing off a counter attack. Chris Lucatorto took it from there, making 12 saves in goal.

Simpson outshot Whitewater 20-13 in the game and 10-5 in the second half. The Storm (6-5-1) spent most of the second half in the attacking third, and had a chance to change the game moments before Hottsmith scored the go-ahead goal. In the 70th minute, Collin Hemann rifled a shot off the post, then Roe collected the rebound and put a shot on frame that was collected by Lucatorto.
