Simpson falls to Coe in final home game of the season

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Charles Swain came off the bench to score 20 points but Simpson couldn't stop Andrew Wirth and Coe in a 75-60 loss on Saturday.

Wirth scored 24 points and went 6-for-9 from 3-point range as the Kohawks (11-12, 3-9 Iowa Conference) won their second game in a row.

Swain was deadly from mid-range, going 7-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arch. Tyler Anderson - another non-starter - finished with 10 points and six rebounds for the Storm (4-19, 2-10).

Simpson got 48 points from bench players.

Trailing by six at halftime, Simpson pulled within four after two free throws by Anderson made it 36-32 with 18:49 to play.

Coe responded with a 7-0 run in just over a minute. A tip-in by JT Vonderhaar started the spurt, which ended when a 3 by Wirth gave Coe a 43-32 lead with 17:20 left. Coe led by as many as 18 down the stretch.

Simpson last led at the 4:12 mark in the first half when a jumper by Swain gave the Storm a 25-24 advantage. The game was tied 28-28 before Matt Daoust closed the first half with back-to-back 3s, giving Coe a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Officially out of the running for a berth in the conference tournament, Simpson will close the season with a pair of road games, beginning with a trip to Loras on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. The Duhawks (13-10, 6-6) beat Buena Vista 106-100 on Saturday. Loras won the first meeting 86-65.

Three seniors were recognized in a ceremony between the women's and men's games as Austin Hennings, Eric Lande and Ryan Olson took the floor at Cowles Fieldhouse for the final time.

Simpson athletes visit Lasik Iowa and Lasik Omaha doctors for annual checkups.
