MINNEAPOLIS – Andy Seidlitz banked in the go-ahead score with 0.7 seconds left and Augsburg beat the Simpson men's basketball team 79-77 on Saturday night.
Simpson trailed 77-76 before Austin Hennings made 1 of 2 free throws with just 7 seconds left. Seidlitz rebounded the miss on the second try converted on the eventual game-winner.
Hennings recorded his third career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Storm (0-2), who went 0-2 on their season-opening trip to Minnesota after losing to Gustavus Adolphus on Friday.
Seidlitz had 17 points and Noah Veach scored 28 to lead the Auggies (2-0). A majority of Veach's production came from the free throw line, where he was 18 of 20.
Simpson trailed 74-70 with 2:22 left after Brett Rasmussen made a pair of free throws for Augsburg. A Charles Swain layup cut the lead to 74-72 with 1:54 left and Dillon Gretzky tied it 74-74 after he made a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left.
Dave Weber made a 3 to give the Auggies a 77-74 lead the next trip down the floor, but Swain answered quickly and the defense forced a turnover with 12 seconds left. Down 77-76, Hennings drew the fifth foul on Veach to earn his trip to the line.
Gretzky and Vaughn Wilson added 10 points apiece and Simpson committed just nine turnovers as a team.
Simpson hosts Grand View in the home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
