Simpson drops home opener to UW-Stevens Point

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- In the first meeting between the two teams, Wisconsin-Stevens Point took the opener, 34-7, over Simpson College football on Saturday inside Buxton Stadium.

The Pointers (2-0) started the series with some trickery on the opening drive. After the Storm (0-2) forced the visitors to line up to punt, UW-Stevens Point opted for the fake and scored on a 65-yard pass from its punter, Carter Unger, to Kameron Kryzans.

Simpson held the Pointers off the scoreboard later in the quarter by blocking a field goal. Junior Cash Lee was able to slip through a crease to block the attempt that allowed senior Carter Paterson to return it 17 yards.

With 70 seconds left in the first half, the Storm found paydirt from the arm of senior Seth Howard. Howard hit senior Austin Bell in stride for a 27-yard TD grab to place the game at 27-7.

Simpson's defense held firm on the Pointers opening drive in the third. After marching down to the one-yard line from its own 27, UW-Stevens Point had a fourth-and-goal stall as the Storm stuffed the rushing attempt.

Howard ended with 163 yards passing on 13 completions. senior Joe McNally was his top target with 73 receiving yards, while Bell hauled in five grabs.

On defense, senior Boston Draper had a game-high 15 tackles, while Paterson tallied 11. Senior Tyreese Jackson recorded a sack, while freshman Zach Truitt and senior Jack Bootsmiller combined for one.
