McKim's IIAC title, three school records highlight Friday's LAC

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Kyle McKim and Cody Carlson broke school records and McKim won a second-straight Iowa Conference title in the 100 breaststroke to lead the Simpson swimming and diving team in the second full day of the Liberal Arts Championships on Friday.

The women's team scored 65 points increasing them to 117, putting them in eighth place of 11 teams. The men scored 95 points, increasing their total to 143 points, good for eighth of nine teams.

MEN'S RECAP

Carlson and McKim's school records came in the preliminaries. Carlson swam a 1:50.20 in the 200 free and McKim broke his own record in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:00.20.

In the evening session, McKim successfully defended his Iowa Conference title in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:00.30 to place fifth overall. Dylan Gray came in seventh (1:00.64), taking home all-conference honors as a top-three finisher out of the league participants. Carlson went on to place 14th in the finals of the 200 freestyle (1:50.93).

McKim and Carlson also appeared in the eighth-place 200 medley relay team, joining Gray and Nathan Schneider (1:42.72). The relay broke the school record of 1:44.42 set in 2013.

WOMEN'S RECAP

Sophomore Haley Blum swam a season-best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:12.61, landing her in 9th. Blum also appeared in the 200 medley alongside Megan Buitendorp, Alex Vander Veen and Tori Haag. The foursome finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:58.22.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Megan Lein, Erica Carlson, Marissa Stepleton and Katie Rubins added an eighth-place effort, touching the wall in 9:08.23.
