Records fall on first day of Liberal Arts Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Tori Haag broke a school record that stood for 13 years and the Simpson swimming and diving teams set five records at the first full day of the Liberal Arts Championships on Thursday.

The women's team scored 52 points and sits in 10th place of 11 teams. The men scored 48 points and sits in eighth place of nine teams.

WOMEN'S RECAP

Haag – a junior softball player who returned to the pool for the first time since high school this season – broke the school record in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:20.76 to place 12th. The previous record of 2:23.93 was set by Elisabeth Nims in 2002.

Haag was also a part of the 400 medley relay team that inked a new school record. She anchored the team of Megan Buitendorp, Haley Blum and Alex Vander Veen, which finished in 4:20.82. Like Haag's record in the 200 IM, the original record of 4:28.00 was set back in 2002.

MEN'S RECAP

Dylan Gray broke his own school record in the 50 freestyle and two relays set new marks for the Storm.

Gray swam a 22.38 to place 15th in the finals of the 50 free – one spot behind teammate Cody Carlson (22.31). The record came in the 200 freestyle, when he broke his previous record (22.38) in the first 50 yards of his lead leg. The relay itself went on to set a school record, as the team of Gray, Scott Wailes, Nathan Schneider and Cody Carlson placed seventh in 1:30.67.

The Storm also set a record in the 400 medley relay. Gray swam the third leg this time around, joining Schneider, Kyle McKim and Carlson to touch the wall in 3:47.28, placing ninth.
