Storm fall to Dubuque in final home dual

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Brett Roberts increased his winning streak and the Simpson wrestling team split wins with Dubuque on Tuesday, but the Spartans used four bonus-point victories for a 25-15 win.

Wrestling in their final home dual of the season, the Storm (2-6, 0-2 Iowa Conference) won five matches on the day but couldn't recover from getting pinned three matches in a row to start the dual.

The Spartans (6-4, 1-0) won the ninth consecutive dual in the series, though this time around yielded a much closer result that last year's 63-6 final. Julio Chavez (125), Stephen Rosenburg (133) and Jeremy Melendez (141) all earned pins to give Dubuque a comfortable 18-0 lead.

All five of Simpson's wins came by decision.

The now eighth-ranked wrestler in Division III at 184 pounds, Roberts used a big third period to earn his eighth consecutive win. After moving up one spot in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, the senior got two takedowns in the final 2 minutes to pull away from Collin Heidemann for a 7-2 decision. He is now 15-2 on the season.

The most exciting match of the night came courtesy of DeVaughn Scott at 197 pounds. The freshman trailed Cosmo Halwix 7-2 after two periods and was down 8-5 in the closing seconds before getting a takedown and two back points for the dramatic win. Scott also narrowly avoided a pin in the opening period.

Normally a 133-pounder, Devan Berrian wrestled 149 on the night, giving Simpson its first win with a 9-8 decision over Donovan Luckett. Like Scott, Berrian trailed late in the third period before getting an escape and a takedown in the final 30 seconds before riding out the one-point win.

Jason Clark (157) and Garret Jay (165) picked up the other wins for the Storm. Clark controlled riding time in a 5-2 win over Kody Krenz and Jay came down from 2-0 to beat Frank Frassetto 9-3.

Colby Vlieger was on his way to securing the team's sixth win before Sawyer McCaffrey scored the go-ahead takedown with three seconds remaining, giving him the 3-2 win in the 285-pound match.

Up next: Simpson goes to the Central Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Pella, Iowa.
