Women’s golf takes second at own invitational

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson women's golf team placed three players in the top 10 and placed second at its own Simpson Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Kelsa Berkland tied for sixth to lead the Storm, who scored a 347 to finish 11 strokes behind champion William Penn. Berkland finished the day with six pars and one birdie for a 12-over 83 at the par-71, 5,816-yard layout at Indianola Country Club. Grand View's Maria Mantilla shot an 80 to win individual medalist honors in the field of 43 golfers.

Simpson golfers finished the day with four birdies.

Lydia Martin carded an 85 to tie for ninth and Haley Booton shot an 86 to take 10th. Martin biridied the par-3, 155-yard ninth hole while Booton was steady with six pars. 

Madison Hance and Courtney Mabeus rounded out Simpson's first team. Hance shot a 93 to tie for 16th and Mabeus shot 100 to tie for 26th. Each picked up a birdie on the day.

Kelsey Van Veen led Simpson's second group with a 100, tying with Mabeus for 26th. Kelsey Poppe tied for 31st (104), Cassady Carmichael took 34th (105), Samantha Sweet placed 35th (107) and Lexi Wagner came in 38th (115).

BUENA VISTA FALL INVITATIONAL
The Storm placed sixth of 11 teams at last weekend's Buena Vista Invitational, held Sept. 10-11 at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake. Simpson shot 717 as a team, 18 strokes behind fifth-place Peru State. 

William Penn ran away with the title, shooting 632 to finish 42 shots ahead of second-place Briar Cliff.

Martin enjoyed a steady weekend, shooting an 87 in the opening round before closing with an 86 to tie for 16th in the field of 71 golfers. Mabeus tied Martin for the team's best score in the final round, shooting 90 in the first to tie for 22nd with a 176. 

Booton tied for 27th (89-91-180), Berkland tied for 46th (95-94-189), Hance tied for 50th (98-93-191) and Poppe tied for 59th (102-103-205).
