Berkland, Martin lead women's golf at Sail Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Led by Kelsa Berkland and Lydia Martin, the Simpson women's golf team finished fifth of ten teams at the season-opening Sail Classic from Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, which concluded Saturday.

In fifth place after Friday's first round, Simpson held steady in the second round to hold off Coe by nine strokes. Simpson shot 351 Friday and 354 Saturday. Host team Luther edged Central by two strokes for first place.

The 10-team field featured 8 of 9 Iowa Conference schools. The Storm took fourth among IIAC participants.

Berkland and Martin tied for 16th along with four other golfers in the field of 63.Berkland led Simpson with an opening-round 85 before closing with an 87. Martin shot 87 on Friday and finished with an 85, giving the duo 172 for the weekend.

Courtney Mabeus tied for 27th, following up her opening round 90 with an 87 to finish with 177. Freshman Madison Hance tied for 30th, carding 89 in the first round and 91 in the second for a 36-hole total of 180.

Haley Booton tied for 37th (89-95-184), Kelsey Poppe tied for 44th (97-95-192), Cassady Carmichael took 49th (98-98-196) and Kelsey Van Veen came in 53rd (102-101-203).

Up next: The Storm participate in the Buena Vista Invitational next weekend in Storm Lake. The first round takes place Saturday, Sept. 10 beginning at Noon and concludes Sunday with a 9 a.m. start.
