Storm fall to unbeaten Wartburg

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Katie Sommer had 26 points and seven assists and second-ranked Wartburg beat Simpson 81-66 on Saturday at Cowles Fieldhouse.

Aryn Jones added 17 points for the Knights (15-0, 6-0 Iowa Conference), who extended their regular season winning streak to 23 games dating back to last season. Wartburg closed the first half on a 17-9 run and led by as many as 22 in the second half.

Victoria Hazard had 17 points and five assists to lead the Storm (10-6, 4-3), who lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Noreen Morrow finished with 13 points and needs 18 to reach 1,000 for her career.

Simpson made a run early in the second quarter but the reigning league MVP responded.

Trailing by nine, Jenna Taylor's layin sparked an 8-0 Simpson run. Maddie Simmons made a jumper, Hazard made two free throws and Claire Johnson had a layup to pull Simpson within 24-23 with 6:03 to play in the half.

Sommer answered with a 3 -- one of her six -- and Emma Gerdes made one of her own to extend the lead to seven. Simpson couldn't get closer than four the rest of the way and lost the third quarter 29-18.

Wartburg scored 24 points off Simpson's 25 turnovers.
