Sharp-shooting Storm cruise to big win over Carroll

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Victoria Hazard filled the stat sheet with 13 points, eight assists and four steals and the Simpson women's basketball team got its first win of the season in convincing fashion, 85-54 over Carroll (Wis.) on the second day of the 2017 Fidelity Bank & Trust Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Loras.

The Storm (1-1) shot better than 61 percent from the field and 66 percent from beyond the arc to even their record on the year.

Janey Botkins led a stellar bench effort with 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range, helping Simpson hit 10 from long range on the afternoon. Cameron Kincaid added 12 and Rachel Freland chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Brittney Wald scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Pioneers (0-2).

Turning Point
Simpson put the game away with a dominating third quarter, outscoring Carroll 28-7. The Storm held a 38-28 lead at the break, but took control with a 19-5 run to start the second half. Botkins, Freland, Claire Johnson and Kali Rasmussen all made 3-pointers during the quarter.

• The Storm improved to 4-0 all-time against Carroll.
• Simpson shot 61.1 percent from the field, the highest by the team since Feb. 7, 2008 when the the Storm shot 63.8 percent in a win over Central.
• The team shot 66.7 percent from 3-point range, the highest by the team (with at least 10 makes) since Feb. 23, 2008 when the Storm shot 76.9 percent (10-for-13) against Cornell.
• Botkins' five 3-pointers marked the third game of her career when she made at least five 3s and the 10th time she made at least three.
• Hazard's eight assists are the most by a Simpson player since Maddie Bosworth had 10 against Iowa Wesleyan on Nov. 27, 2015.
