STORM LAKE, Iowa — The breaks have been going against the Simpson softball team for much of the 2017 season, and Monday was no different.
The Storm were one out away from their first win of the conference season when Marissa Schmidt hit a walk-off grand slam to give Buena Vista a 7-5 win in game two. The Beavers won the opener 9-3.
Game 1
Madi Bennett and Madison Rasmusson homered but Keely Bycroft hit Buena Vista's first grand slam of the day to break open what was a 5-3 game in the fifth. Bycroft went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Beavers (16-12, 4-4 Iowa Conference).
Game 2
The Storm (5-25, 0-10) trailed 3-1 going into the seventh before plating four to take a 5-3 lead. Rasmusson and Snyder doubled and two runs scored when pitcher Moriah Guyett couldn't handle a two-out popup from Kayla Reusche.
Jordan Williamson went 3-for-4 with a double and Taylor Davis finished with two hits and two RBIs. Maggie Long went the distance, giving up four earned runs off 10 hits.
