ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Simpson softball team posted a 1-3 record to start the season after facing a challenging schedule at the Rochester Dome Tournament over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Storm lost to No. 14 St. Thomas 11-3 and Wis.-La Crosse 6-5. Simpson beat St. Scholastica 3-2 on Sunday morning before falling to No. 9 St. Catherine 9-1.
St. Thomas and St. Catherine qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago, St. Scholastica won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and was picked to win it again, and Wis.-La Crosse finished second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Brianna Chaplin led Simpson at the plate, hitting .357 with four doubles and three RBIs. Kayleigh Snyder had three hits and showed her speed on the basepaths, swiping four bases in as many attempts. Four different pitchers took the circle with Arianna Kim tossing a complete-game in the win against St. Scholastica.
No. 14 St. Thomas 11, Simpson 3
The Storm took a 1-0 lead on Ashley Allen's RBI double in the first inning but the Tommies batted around in the top of the second, scoring four runs. Last year's NCAA Finals representative added another four-run frame in the seventh to pull away for the win. Allen finished 2-for-3 and Chaplin went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Maggie Long took the loss in 4 1/3 innings.
Wis.-La Crosse 6, Simpson 5
Simpson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Chaplin's RBI double in the first but La Crosse rattled off five unanswered runs over the next three innings. Brooke Brommel and Brittany Frey drove in runs in a three-run fourth to get the Storm back in it, but Simpson went down in order in the seventh.
Simpson 3, St. Scholastica 2
The Storm got the first win of the Brent Matthias era behind a complete-game effort in the cricle from Arianna Kim. Kim allowed just one earned run, fanning six and giving up eight hits. She also earned a bases-loaded walk to score the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning. The speedy Snyder finished 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored.
No. 9 St. Catherine 9, Simpson 1
In a re-match of last year's NCAA Regional, Wildcat pitching held Simpson to just one hit. Jordan Williamson doubled and scored in the sixth but St. Kate's put together big innings with five runs in the third and four in the seventh.

The Storm make their annual pilgrimage to Kissimmee, Fla. for Spring Break beginning Saturday, March 4. Simpson will play 14 games from Friday to Saturday, March 11.
