Storm topped by Northwestern in doubleheader

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Madi Bennett had a pair of doubles but the Simpson softball team couldn't get past a hard-hitting Northwestern team Thursday, losing 8-0 in five innings in game one and 5-2 in the nightcap.

The Red Raiders (20-17) pounded five doubles on the day in handing Simpson a pair of non-conference losses.

Jaclyn Smith went 3-for-4 in game one, driving in runs in the first and second innings as Northwestern jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Jessica Rayela went 3-for-3 to back starter Kayla Tindall, who held Simpson to two hits in the run-ruled contest.

The Storm (5-23) showed signs of life offensively in game two, tying the game 1-1 in the third after a leadoff double by Bennett. She doubled off the wall again in the fourth, driving in a run to pull Simpson within 3-2 after the fourth.

Northwestern extended its lead to 5-2 in the sixth when two runs scored on Jessica Sandbulte's sacrifice fly and Simpson managed just one baserunner in the final two innings.

Madison Rasmusson allowed four earned runs off six hits in the loss, striking out four.
