Storm finish fourth at Wartburg Indoor Select Meet

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Simpson men's track and field team raced to a fourth-place finish on Saturday at the Wartburg Indoor Select Meet.

The Storm had 11 top-five showings at the event, with Steven Cruz-Castro claiming the only first-place result. Cruz-Castro ran to first in the 600-meters with a time of 1:25.97. The freshman ran a shade over a second quicker than his seeded time of 1:27.00.

In the 60-meter dash, Simpson had a great showing with three top-four finishers. Travis Tupper ran a 7.16 time for second, followed by Craig Garrison and Kirk Wicks. The trio tallied fast times for the Storm in the 200-meters as well, with Tupper garnering fourth, Wicks in sixth and Garrison next in seventh.

Jordan Coughenour just missed first place by a hair in the 400 meters. Coughenour crossed the finish in 51.47, which was one-hundredth of a second slower than first. Emmitt Wheatley came in fifth for Simpson.

Trey Thompson led the long-distance runners with a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters. Ryan Courtney crossed the line in eighth place.

The 4x200-meter relay of Troy Vittetoe, Kellen Fitch, Terrhyn Jacoby and Carter Fricke picked up a second-place nod in the race with a time of 1:34.36.

In the field events, Carter Berkey soared 6.14 meters for fourth in the long jump. Brian Rew earned 11th with a jump of 5.15 meters.

Caleb Striegel had a toss of 14.50 meters in the shot put to land him in fifth. Striegel also placed 16th in the hammer throw. Mason Spree received 15th in the hammer throw with a launch of 13.62 meters.

Simpson is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Darren Young Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa.
