Converse, Armstrong, Barnard still alive at IIAC Men's Tennis Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Geoff Converse and the doubles team of Jeff Armstrong and Connor Barnard are still alive after the first day of the 2014 Iowa Conference Men's Individual Tennis Tournament.

Converse will face Buena Vista's Robby Steffes in the semifinals of Flight C Singles and Armstrong and Barnard will take on Buena Vista's Buzzard and Bieber in the semifinals of Flight B Doubles when play continues on Saturday.

Converse received a bye in the first round before scoring a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jesse Coleman (Loras). He went on to take Alex Anderson (Central) in a third-set tiebreak, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (7) to set up the matchup with Steffes.

Armstrong and Barnard cruised to an 8-1 win over Mniszewski and O'Brien (Loras) in the opening round before topping Schirm and Schlafer (Coe) 8-4 in the quarterfinals.

Zach Kusick advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight A Singles before falling to Luther's Kyle Appel 6-3, 6-1.

Both Barnard and Peter Reitgraf made it to the quarterfinal round in Flight B Singles before bowing out.

The tournament will conclude Saturday with semifinal and place matches in three singles flights and two doubles flights. Play will begin with semifinals in all three singles draws at 9 a.m. at Clark Racquet Center on the campus of Coe College. Doubles play will commence following the conclusion of the singles tournaments.
