Dominating ground game propels football to win at Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Jordan Beem's touchdown run in the fourth quarter put Simpson ahead by two scores, an Isaac Frazier sack backed up Coe's final drive and the Storm held on for an 18-15 win Saturday.

Beem ran for a career-high 193 yards and two TDs as the Storm (3-3, 2-1 Iowa Conference) dominated on the ground, holding the ball for nearly 42 minutes and rushing for 264 yards as a team. Beem scored on runs of 35 and 21 yards, the second putting Simpson ahead 18-7 with 9:24 to play.

Josh Rekers threw a 14-yard TD pass to Colton Storla with 8:02 left, pulling the Kohawks (2-4, 1-2) within 18-15.

With the game in the balance, the Simpson offense responded with a crippling 13-play, 42-yard drive that ate up 7:20 on the clock. A Braden Meints punt pinned Coe at its own 12 with 42 seconds to play.

"I was so impressed by the way the o-line played today," head coach Jim Glogowski said. "Today was a phenomenal effort up front."

Coe drove to Simpson's 30 before Frazier took down Rekers for a 9-yard loss. Safely out of field goal range, Rekers clocked the ball and had to heave a Hail Mary on the final play of the game, which fell to the turf as time expired.

"This was a gutsy win on the road," Glogowski said. 

Quarterback Caleb Frye threw for 135 yards, rushed for 44 and tossed a 3-yard TD to Nathan Russell.

Drew Jensen's first extra point attempt of the game was blocked and Simpson went for 2 the rest of the way, failing on both attempts. Despite the early struggles in the kicking game, Meints and the punt team came up big, pinning Coe inside its own 20 three times on the day.

The Simpson offense ran 21 more plays than Coe as Simpson won its second straight in Cedar Rapids.
