Pirtle, Richman power Storm to series win over Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Simpson baseball team pounded out 16 hits in game two and got a solid start from Adam Richman, beating Dubuque 12-6 to split the doubleheader after losing game one 6-4 on Saturday.

The Storm (19-19, 11-15 Iowa Conference) tallied their second series win of the season and moved closer to a berth in the six-team conference tournament. Simpson is currently in fifth place with only a doubleheader at Coe remaining on the schedule.

Josh Pirtle went 5-for-9 on the day, hitting .529 with five doubles and seven RBIs on the weekend. Michael Chia hit .500 with three doubles.

Game 2: Simpson 12, Dubuque 6

Pirtle closed the weekend going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Adam Richman threw seven strong innings in the series-clinching win.

The Spartans (12-24, 7-17) committed six errors in the loss, surrendering five unearned runs.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning, but Simpson took a 4-3 lead in the second when Pirtle drove in Brett Crable on a fielder's choice. Simpson tacked on two more in the third to take a 6-3 lead and never looked back. Chia doubled and scored and Jake Esdohr came in to score on an error.

Simpson led 11-3 through five and a half before Dubuque dented the plate in the sixth.

After a rocky first inning, Richman (2-1) retired the side in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. The freshman – who had some control issues early in the season – walked just one batter and allowed six hits in his seven innings, striking out two.

Game 1: Dubuque 6, Simpson 4

A sacrifice fly by Jacob Evans gave Dubuque 5-4 lead in the fifth and Eddie Pablo drove in an insurance run in the sixth as Dubuque beat Simpson 6-4 in game one.

Tyler Craig's two-run homer gave Simpson a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Dubuque came back with three in the home half. Vince Parisi hit a two-run double and Pablo singled in a run to give Dubuque a 3-2 lead.

The Spartans tacked on a run in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead before Esdohr tied the game on a two-RBI single in the top of the fifth.

Dalton Garst went four innings in the win and Justin Naval held Simpson hitless in the sixth and seventh for the two-inning save.

Gage Reis allowed five runs off eight hits in four innings in the loss.

Simpson closes the regular season with a doubleheader at Coe on Friday, May 2. The two teams opened the conference schedule with a doubleheader split in late March. The Kohawks (14-21, 10-16) took three of four from Luther over the weekend.
