Pennings named IIAC Athlete of the Week
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Simpson baseball player Matt Pennings earned Iowa Conference Athlete and Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors after a dominating week on the mound, the Iowa Conference announced Monday.
A junior right-hander from Ankeny, Iowa (Ankeny HS), Pennings earned a win in the conference opener against Coe on Sunday and had a solid relief appearance against AIB on Wednesday to take home the award for the period ending Sunday, March 23.
The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second of his career, adding to his accolade from May 5, 2013.
Pennings helped Simpson to a 1-1 start in conference play by going the distance in a 2-1 win over Coe. He went all seven innings, struck out eight and surrendered just three hits after allowing a run in the first. He opened the week with 1 1/3 innings of scoreles relief in a 9-4 win over AIB on Wednesday, striking out two.
The Storm (7-4, 1-1 Iowa Conference) return to action Friday, March 28 when they host Loras for the first two games of a four-game weekend tilt. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
