Craig named IIAC Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Simpson first baseman Tyler Craig earned Iowa Conference Baseball Position Player and Male Athlete of the Week Honors after abusing the pitching staffs from Wesleyan (Conn.) and Wheaton (Ill.) at the Tucson Invitational last week.

Craig, a senior preseason All-American from Urbandale, Iowa (Urbandale HS), went 7-for-10 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs as Simpson beat Wesleyan 14-3 and Wheaton 13-6 on Thursday, March 13. He slugged 1.500 to help the Storm close the tournament on a four-game winning streak and return to Iowa with a 5-3 record.

Craig missed Wednesday's game with the flu, but showed no "ill" effects on Thursday. In the first game against Wesleyan, he went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs and five runs scored. In the nightcap against Wheaton, he hit a grand slam in the third inning to give Simpson a 4-1 lead. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs.

Weather permitting, the Storm are set to resume play Wednesday, March 19 against AIB in Des Moines. The Iowa Conference slate is scheduled to begin Friday, March 21 with a four-game set against Coe in Cedar Rapids.
