INDIANOLA, Iowa – Taylor Harmon scored the winning run on a wild pitch in game two as Simpson earned a doubleheader split against league-leading Wartburg on Saturday afternoon. Wartburg won game one 5-4 in 10 innings and Simpson took the nightcap 2-1.
With the game-tied 1-1 in the seventh, Harmon led off Simpson's last at-bat with a hit-by-pitch. He moved to second on sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored the game-winner when Alex Steines sent one to the backstop for the second time in the inning.
Game one was originally scheduled to go seven innings and game two was set for nine, but because the opener went to extras it, in effect, became the nine-inning game.
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in game two, as Simpson managed just three hits and Wartburg spaced out seven.
Austin Burlin scored on an error to give Simpson a 1-0 lead in the second and Wartburg tied it 1-1 on a Tyler Mougin sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Kyle Helmerson (1-2) earned the win in relief for the Storm (12-8, 5-5 Iowa Conference). The righty was nearly unhittable, allowing just one and walking one in 3 2/3.
Parker Bolt (3-3) suffered the loss for the Knights (12-8, 6-2), giving up three hits and striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.
Game one was a wild one that saw the Storm come back from three down to force extras, only to lose in the 10th.
Simpson trailed 4-1 in the sixth when Michael Chia hit a two-out, bases-clearing triple to tie the game 4-4.
Simpson had a chance to win in the ninth and a chance to tie in the 10th, but couldn't come up with a timely hit. Nick Anderson struck out with the bases loaded to end the ninth and Tyler Craig grounded into a double play with a runner in scoring position in the 10th.
Michael Schinstock drove in the go-ahead run to give Wartburg a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th.
Brock Borgeson (0-1) suffered the loss in relief of starter Gage Reis, who went 8 2/3 and struck out six. Ben Rettenmeier (4-0) went nine innings and struck out 11 in the win and Gavin Nadermann pitched a scoreless 10th for his second save.
Simpson and Wartburg finish their four-game set with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
