Baseball splits doubleheader with Loras

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Matt Pennings gave Simpson a strong effort on the mound in game one but the offense couldn't get things going in game two as the Storm split a doubleheader with Loras on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm (8-5, 2-2 Iowa Conference) won game one 3-0 behind a complete-game from Pennings. In game two, the offense only advanced one runner past third base as the Duhawks (3-6, 1-1) prevailed by the same 3-0 score.

Simpson 3, Loras 0
Pennings (3-1) improved to 2-0 in conference play, striking out five in the complete-game (7 inn.) win. He surrendered five hits, but only allowed one Duhawk past first base.

The Simpson offense wasn't overpowering – only coming up with four hits – but effective. Jake Barr drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first, Jake Scieszinski singled in a run in the second and Tyler Craig brought in a run on a double in the third.

Simpson took advantage of two Loras errors, both of which resulted in an unearned run.

Loras 3, Simpson 0
Adam Schwoebel struck out 10 and Danny Fahlgren went 2-for-3 to lead the Duhawks. Schwoebel (1-1) gave up five hits in 6 2/3 and allowed just one runner to reach third.

Fahlgren and Cole Reeg each drove in a run in the second and Loras added another run on an error in the seventh, more than enough breathing room for Schwoebel and company. Connor Schrek and Jeremy Gerardy held Simpson hitless over the final 2 1/3 as Grardy earned his first save.

Simpson looked like it might crawl back into the game when Jake Esdohr led off the fourth with a single, but Schwoebel struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

Kyle Helmerson (0-2) took the loss, allowing two earned in three innings.
