Storm come up short on senior night

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson volleyball team lost 3-0 to Coe Friday night in the team's final home match of the season as the Storm honored their three seniors before the contest, Hannah Lester, Alyssa Mathews and Taylor Sudmann.

Simpson moves to 8-13 for the year and 0-5 in American Rivers Conference play, while the Kohawks are now 11-12 and 2-1 in the league. Coe used set scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 for the sweep.

The Storm held tight through the opening set at 6-6, but the visitors stretched it to 13-7 with the help of three kills to swing the momentum. Simpson rallied with the set sitting at 24-12 to make it 24-16 on the back of kills by Niya Harris, Kamryn Juni and Madison Fleer, but the Kohawks ended the run after forcing an attack error.

It was all Coe in the second set as the team hit .345 on 13 kills and managed to keep track of the Storm offense as they hit -.037. Simpson had the same fate in the third after hitting -.029 on five kills, compared to Coe's .162 and 12 successful attacks. The Kohawks hit .248 during the match.

In the three seniors' last match inside Cowles Fieldhouse, Mathews dished out 14 assists, Lester ended with five kills and four block assists and Sudmann tallied four kills. Juni led the offense with six kills.

The Storm have a break in the schedule and return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 at Loras for a 7 p.m. match. Simpson remains in Dubuque, Iowa to take on Dubuque the following day at 1 p.m.
