Simpson splits first day at Minnesota-Morris

MORRIS, Minn. - The Simpson volleyball team split play on the first day of the Minnesota-Morris Invitational, beating Bethany Lutheran 3-1 before falling to host Morris, 3-0.

The Storm (2-2) beat Bethany Lutheran 25-18, 25-17, 25-27, 25-10 and lost to Morris 25-19, 25-13, 25-17.

Jacqueline Luth and MacKenzie McGraw led the way, accounting for half of Simpson's offense. Luth had 18 kills and McGraw finished with 17 while hitting a team-high .342.

McGraw had 12 kills and hit .381 while Luth hit 11 kills and hit .333 in the win over Bethany Lutheran. Sara Hoppenworth had 23 assists and Olivia Sulentic finished with 16 digs and three service aces. 

The Simpson defense came up big with 12 total blocks, led by Sami Boekhoff with six block assists. Torey Buenger and Niki Dean had five apiece.

Simpson couldn't slow down the hosts in the second match as Morris hit .248 as a team.

Tabitha Blaser paced the Storm with eight kills and Luth chipped in with seven. Maura Chadwick had 10 assists and Sulentic added 21 digs.
