Storm sweep first day of Luther Invitational

DECORAH, Iowa - The Simpson volleyball team picked up a pair of much-needed wins Friday at the Luther Invitational, beating Alverno 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-15) and Waldorf 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21).

The Storm (4-9) had lost six of their last seven matches before Friday's sweep. Senior Megan Dunlavy led the charge with 29 kills and Simpson out-hit opponents .241-.119.

Simpson met little resistance in disposing of Alverno. Dunlavy had a team-high 13 kills and didn't commit an error in 22 attempts, registering a .591 hitting percentage. Audrey Schuttler had three service aces and 11 digs and the Simpson defense held the Inferno to a -.089 hitting percentage.

Dunlavy led the offense again in game two, but had some help from Steph Keller. Dunlavy buried 16 kills and hit .302 and Keller had 15 kills, helping Simpson hit .257 as a team. Freshman Lauren Martin chipped in with six kills while her classmate Haley Danforth placed three service aces.

Ashley Padget handed out 41 assists while Kristen Watson added 29. Schuttler led the way with 32 digs.

Simpson continues play tomorrow when it faces Knox at 10 a.m. and closes play against Luther at Noon.
