Women's swimming breaks 12-year-old relay record at Liberal Arts day two

ELSAH, Ill. — More school records were broken during day two of the Liberal Arts championships on Friday night as the Storm women remain in eighth place. Simpson has 129 points, and Franklin leads the meet with 483.

"We're continuing to swim better than expected," head coach Tom Caccia said.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Cheyenne Wiederholt, Alex Vander Veen, Cassie Bergman and Brenna Yeutsy finished in eighth place in the finals, beating the old school record by almost 11 seconds. The four finished the relay in 8:33.73. The previous record was set in the 2004-05 season at the Liberal Arts Championships by Lauren Origer, Kristen Sondag, Amanda Rigg and Erin Fitzgerald with a time of 8:44.15.

Brenna Yeutsy finished 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.32, but broke the school record in the prelims with a time of 2:01.21. Kayla Cary broke her own record in the 100 butterfly, finishing seventh in 1:01.69. Her previous record was 1:04.75, set at the Pioneer Classic earlier this season.

The 200 medley team of Megan Buitendorp, Mikala Williams-Yee, Vander Veen and Bergman finished in ninth with a time of 1:57.67.

Wiederholt finished 13th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.22, a career-best and second-best in school history. Buitendorp was right behind with a time of 1:05.35.

"You can't do any better than the best you've ever done," Caccia said. "We're very happy with our performances."
