ST. PETER, Minn. – Jenna Goldsmith scored a game-high 23 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and Wis.-Stout beat the Simpson women's basketball team 83-75 Saturday at the Gustavus Adolphus Classic.
Goldsmith went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line as the Blue Devils (1-2) made 24 as a team, shooting 75 percent from the charity stripe.
Simpson finished the weekend 0-2 after losing to Wis.-River Falls 72-63 Friday.
Maddie Bosworth and Mackenzie Haupt scored 13 points apiece to lead the Storm (1-3). Unlike Stout, Simpson struggled from the line, going just 9-for-20.
Simpson started the game strong, going up 10-3 after a Haupt free throw with 5:44 left in the first quarter. The Storm led by five before Goldsmith scored rattled off seven straight points to give Stout a 21-19 lead.
Stout mounted a crippling 14-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and went into the second half for a 50-35 lead.
Simpson crept back in the game late, pulling within 80-75 on a Haupt jumper with 16 seconds left, but it was too little, too late.
