Haag reaches milestone, Fisher tosses gem as Storm split with Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – Tori Haag drove in her 100th career RBI, Riley Fisher pitched a shutout in game two and the Simpson softball team held onto second place in the Iowa Conference standings after a doubleheader split with Wartburg on Saturday, losing game one 11-2 in five innings before winning game two 2-0.

Haag hit a solo homer in the third and Rachel Guessford hit one in the seventh as Fisher (14-1) dealt her fifth shutout of the season. She allowed just five hits and walked one while striking out six to keep the Storm (29-8, 8-4) a game ahead of Central in the standings.

Already alone in third place on Simpson's career list, Haag became just the third player in school history to reach 100 RBIs. Guessford crushed her 11th home run of the season, tops in the IIAC and the second-most in school history. She also leads the league with 42 RBIs, three shy of tying a school record.

Just a week removed from upsetting No. 2 Luther, the upstart Knights (14-22, 4-6) jumped all over Simpson with eight runs in the first two innings in the opener. Kimberly Wedeking led the charge, hitting a grand slam in the first inning and adding a two–run shot in the fourth. She got the win in the circle, holding the Storm to two runs off four hits in five innings.

Fisher drove in a run on a single in the second and pinch-hitter Ashley Allen hit a solo home run in the fifth, the freshman's first career long ball.

Up next: Weather permitting, Simpson is set to host No. 2 Luther on Saturday, April 30 in the season finale. Simpson's eight seniors will be recognized before the game.
