Storm knock off No. 25 Wis.-Oshkosh in opener
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Tori Haag had four hits, a home run and four RBIs to lead the Simpson softball team to an 11-4 upset of No. 25 Wis.-Oshkosh in the 2016 season opener Friday night at the Superior Dome.
Haag homered to lead off the game and sparked a key four-run third for the Storm (1-0), who improved to 19-1 at the Finlandia Dome Tournament over the past four seasons. Haag finished 4-for-4 on the day.
Brianna Chaplin and Rachel Guessford also homered for Simpson, which pounded out 16 hits. Guessford added three RBIs.
Caitlin Hoerning went 2-for-3 to lead the Titans (1-1), who came back with two runs in the second after allowing three in the first. Haag responded with a two-out single in the third, driving in two as Simpson extended its lead to 7-2.
Riley Fisher went the distance in the circle, tossing seven effective innings. She allowed five hits and four runs - three earned - striking out six.
Up next: Simpson has a full slate Saturday, playing four games on day two of the Finlandia Dome Tournament. Simpson is set to play Alverno, Edgewood, Marian (Wis.) and Lakeland.
