Van Houten named to academic all-district team

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson's Kylie Van Houten has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 ® Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

As a district team honoree, Van Houten's name advances to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honors will be selected later this month.

Van Houten - a senior from Des Moines, Iowa double-majoring in computer science and mathematics - maintained an impressive 3.96 cumulative GPA through the 2013 fall semester. On the field, Van Houten earned third team NFCA All-Midwest Region honors in 2013. Off the field, she was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, was named to the President's List (4.0/4.0) five times and the Dean's List (3.7/4.0) twice, and won Simpson's Jordan Science Achievement Award as a senior.

A four-year starter at second base for the Storm, Van Houten was a career .284 hitter with nine home runs, 79 RBIs and 23 doubles. She had a career-year as a junior in 2013, hitting .374 with seven home runs, 30 RBIs and 11 doubles. This season she hit .223 and drove in 13 runs.

Simpson went 27-15 this season, finishing the season in a three-way tie for second in the Iowa Conference after going 10-4. The Storm went 2-2 at the Iowa Conference Tournament, finishing third after entering with the No. 4 seed.

To be eligible for Academic All‐America® consideration, a student‐athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All‐America honors on more than 20,000 student‐athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
