Joyeux, Hodge turn in strong performances

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Competing for the second time in as many days, the Simpson men's and women's swimming teams continued to show signs of improvement despite falling to Loras on Saturday.

On the women's side, the Duhawks won, 117-23; for the men, it was Loras taking a 101-46 decision.

A day after the women's team went 2-0 in a double dual with Coe and College of St. Mary, head coach Aaron Strain was pleased with both team's efforts.

"We had a great meet last night and turned around and swam better this afternoon," Strain said. "I was concerned about having two meets in about 18 hours, but the swimmers really responded well."

Competing in only the fourth dual in program history, the men's team showed great strides as a pair of freshmen combined for three first-place finishes. Sylvain Joyeux took the honors in both the 50 and 100-meter freestyle, winning the 50 in 26.34 and the 100 in 58.30, nearly two seconds head of second-place finisher Ryan Momberger.

"Sylvain had a monster meet today," Strain said. "He looked very impressive winning both the 50 and 100 free in only his fourth meet. I'm excited to witness his maturation throughout the season and his career."

Freshman Terry Hodge had Simpson's other first-place finish, winning the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:17.69.

Catherine Mayes and Bobbi Pearson led Simpson with two second-place finishes a-piece on the women's side. Mayes came in second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:37.54) and 200-meter IM (2:54.26), while Pearson took second in the 50 (30.76) and 400-meter freestyle (5:26.80).

The Storm will not hti the pool in competition for the remainder of the month, as the next scheduled competition is the Mutual of Omaha Invitational on Dec. 4-5.
