Men fall to Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson women's swimming team won its first conference meet in five years Friday night, scoring a 66-23 win over Coe as part of a double-dual with the Kohawks and College of St. Mary.

Simpson also defeated College of St. Mary, 61-34. On the men's side, the Storm fell to Coe, 45-30.

"We have been working hard every day in practice to set us up for success tonight," Simpson head swimming coach Aaron Strain said. "We are just scratching the surface of our potential. I am excited for the coming weeks to really take it up a notch to see what we can do."

The women got a big boost by winning both relays. Reigning Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week Keely Goshia led off the 400-yard medley relay, teaming with Abby Weers, Lauren Frodyma and Anna Aldridge for a time of 5:24.64. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Aldridge joined Becca Harris, Catherine Mayes and Bobbie Pearson for another first-place finish (4:40.39).

"The girls winning both relays gave us a huge advantage," Strain said. "All of our swimmers swam great and should be proud of the effort they put in."

The women added seven individual first-place finishes, getting two a-piece from Pearson and Mayes. Pearson triumphed in the 50 (29.94) and 100-yard freestyle (1:06.22) while Mayes laid claim to the 200-yard IM (2:55.24) and 100-yard backstroke (1:21.97).

For the men, Terry Hodge and Sylvain Joyeux turned in first-place finishes, along with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Conor Fair, Andrew Kline, Hodge and Joyeux. Hodge took an individual first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:18.81) while Joyeux led the pack in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.19).

The Storm hosts another conference dual Saturday, as Loras travels to Indianola for a 1 p.m. start.
