WAUKESHA, Wis. — Conor Riordan finished a rebound shy of a double-double, Sam Amsbaugh polished off an all-tournament effort and the Simpson men's basketball team beat Concordia Wisconsin 83-74 in the consolation game of the Carroll Pioneer Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Carroll University on Saturday.
Riordan filled the stat sheet with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Storm (2-1). Amsbaugh also scored 19 points and Tyler Stumbo added 14 off the bench.
Stumbo and Amsbaugh combined to go 15-for-18 from the charity stripe as Simpson went 29-for-37 as a team. The Storm led from wire-to-wire, answering every challenge by Concordia Wisconsin.
Josh Hau scored 19 points and Jake Jurss 18 for the Falcons (0-2).
Turning Points
Simpson led 15-12 with 14:19 left in the first half before mounting a 15-2 run to build a 30-14 advantage. The run was highlighted by back-to-back 3s from Riordan while Stumbo added six points.
The Storm took control of the game early in the second half with a 16-5 run. The Falcons had just pulled within six on a layup by Andrew Fratzke when buckets by Amsbaugh and Stumbo sparked the run. Amsbaugh converted an and-one during the stretch and a pair of free throws from Stumbo made it 62-45 with 11:52 to play.
