Storm women open season with home victory

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Simpson College women's cross country team claimed victory on its home course at the Bill Buxton Invitational to open its fall season, Friday, at Pickard Park.

The bright start to the season was highlighted by a trio of sophomores finishing in the top five overall for the Storm. Lara Kallem took second overall, covering the 4K course in a career-best 16:23.1. Teghan Booth shaved off a minute of her time in last season's Bill Buxton Invitational, finishing fourth in 16:26.4. Defending champion Emma Angus finished right behind Booth in fifth, but still improved her time from last year (16:29.2).

Ashley Rockhold, another sophomore, was the fourth Storm runner across the finish line, coming in seventh overall in 16:47.4. Emily Erhardt continued the sophomore trend, rounding out the scoring for Simpson. Erhardt finished in 12th overall with a time of 17:21.0, improving on her time from last year by over a minute.

Rounding out the top seven Storm runners included the only non-sophomore in that group in freshman Elie Tuhn (16th overall, 17:34.1) and sophomore Kaya Young (22nd overall, 17:57.9).

"I could not be more pleased with how our women opened up the 2022 season", said head coach Heath Moenck. "Our women put in great summers and that was on display tonight, with our first five runners all significantly better than a year ago."

The Storm return to action next Saturday, Sep. 10 at 10 a.m., when the squad travels to Grinnell, Iowa for the Les Duke Invitational.
