Storm teams set for action this weekend

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Starting on Thursday, the Simpson teams of men's and women's tennis, women's golf and cross country will compete throughout the weekend.

The Storm men's tennis team competes at home on Thursday against Cornell and takes part in the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament this Saturday. Women's golf hits the links at the Buena Vista Invitational on Saturday, while the cross country teams run in the Loras Triangular.

The women's tennis team has a busy weekend by playing three matches as all three are against conference opponents.

Men's Tennis
After the original season opener was postponed for Simpson, the men will appear in front of their home crowd on Thursday against the Rams. The A-R-C Individual Tournament awaits the Storm on Saturday to close out the fall campaign.

Fifth-year head coach Matt Price brings back seven returners from last year's squad that had their 2019-20 season cut short in the spring. Senior Reade Reiter and junior Peter Walkwitz are the two upperclassmen that will look to lead a group of six sophomores and one freshman.

Sophomore Aaron Price collected the most victories last season for Simpson with five and classmate Caleb Vasconez was next with four.

Cross Country
Along with Simpson and Loras, Dubuque will be running on Saturday at the triangular. The women will run first at 2 p.m., with the men following at 2:45 p.m.

The Storm men started their season by defeating Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 12 with a near perfect score of 16 as the men took the top four spots and eight of the top 10. Sophomore Spencer Moon paced the team by finishing first overall.

For the women, junior Cat Lucht ended first for the team, while four of the squad's top-six runners were freshmen. Lara Kallem and Ashley Rockhold finished second and third, respectively, on the team in their first collegiate meet.

Women's Tennis
After starting the season with a 9-0 sweep of Dubuque last weekend, the Storm face off with an undefeated Wartburg squad on Friday in Waverly, Iowa. Simpson returns home for a home match against rival Central on Saturday and Nebraska Wesleyan awaits the Storm on Sunday to close out the weekend.

Simpson is currently tied for third in the conference standings with the Dutch, while both squads are 1-0. The Storm got out to a quick 3-0 lead over the Spartans in the season opener after the three doubles teams won while only losing four games out of the three matches.

Women's Golf
The Simpson women will travel to Storm Lake, Iowa for the Buena Vista Invitational on Saturday for a one-day event. Senior Emily Jansen finished atop the team leaderboard for the second event in a row for the Storm last weekend at the Ryerson Fall Classic. Freshman Sydney Stephenson and senior Megan Crockett ended second and third, respectively, for head coach Larry Shoop's team.

Simpson will host its own invitational on Wednesday at the Indianola Country Club.
