Freshmen quartet lead Storm women

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Simpson women's cross country team had four freshmen finish inside its top six runners on Saturday as the Storm lost to Nebraska Wesleyan in a dual meet.

"It was an outstanding start to our season against a very good Nebraska Wesleyan squad as Cat Lucht ran terrific to pace us," head coach Heath Moenck said. "It was nice to see our freshmen kick off their careers in style and it was encouraging to have four in our top six. We are a much more deeper and talented team than a year ago."

Junior Cat Lucht ended the 2019 campaign as the team's most valuable runner and carried the momentum into the season opener as she finished fifth overall to lead the Storm with a time of 20:59.52 in the 5K.

Lucht was followed closely by freshmen Lara Kallem and Ashley Rockhold, who earned sixth and seventh, respectively. Junior Sophie Hall tallied eighth to cap the top-10 performances for Simpson.

Macie Bopp and Kaya Young both started their careers with top-15 finishes for Simpson as the duo ended just a hair away from one another. Bopp tallied a mark of 22:08.72 and Young closed the gap with a time of 22:08.93.
