Storm swimmers set records at Grinnell Invite

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Simpson men's swimming team put together its most impressive outing of the season over the weekend, breaking five school records at the Grinnell Invitational held Jan. 20-21.

With only four swimmers competing, the Storm placed seventh of seven teams with 93 points. Grinnell won the meet with 1,290.5 points.

Stephen Schmidt broke four school records and Nathan Schneider broke one over the weekend. In all, Storm swimmers set nine season-best marks in 13 total races.

Schmidt set a record nearly every time he touched the water. He placed 7th in the 100 backstroke (57.94), 13th in the 200 backstroke (2:10.00), 21st in the in the 200 IM (2:14.18) and 21st in the 200 freestyle (1:55.29), all records. Along with Steven Best, Dustin Martens and Schneider he also helped record a season-low time of 4:19.97 in the 400 medley relay, placing 16th.

Schneider broke the record in the 200 butterfly, taking 22nd (2:29.84). He also lowered his personal best time in the 200 freestyle, taking 27th (2:00.17).

Best turned in his best effort of the year in 200 breaststroke (20th, 2:52.36) while Martens had his best outing in the 100 freestyle (44th, 1:00.55).
