Schmidt named IIAC Performer of the Week
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Simpson men's swimmer Stephen Schmidt earned Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Performer of the Week honors for the period ending Oct. 30 after winning the individual title and setting four school records in his first collegiate competition.
Schmidt, a freshman from West Des Moines, Iowa, led the Storm to their first win in program history, 977-858 over Hamline at the Augsburg Pentathlon on Oct. 22. Schmidt accounted for 193 points in the process, winning the meet individual title.
Schmidt swam in five events, winning the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. He set school records in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.60), 100 backstroke (1:01.14), 100-yard IM (1:07.87) and 100 freestyle (53.06). He also swam in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fifth (1:20.89).
Schmidt and his teammates open the conference schedule when they host Coe on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
