Storm break 3-point record in win at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- The Simpson men's basketball team broke the school record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 18 and defeated Buena Vista 98-89 on Wednesday.

The offense was clicking on all cylinders throughout the night, especially from deep to break away from a three-game losing skid. The Storm (10-7, 4-5 American Rivers) shot a 56.3-percent clip from behind the arc, their second-best percentage in school history. Simpson also went 30 of 37 from the free throw line, which was the most makes in a game for the team since they drained 47 against Loras on Jan. 25, 2017.

Kyle Wagner made seven 3-pointers in the contest, tying for third all-time in program history. Conor Riordan was not too far behind his classmate and made five, both finished with 23 points.

The Storm jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead over the Beavers (8-11, 2-8) right before the 16-minute mark. Kyle Wagner was a major key during that span and scored eight of his 23 points for the night. Simpson pushed the lead to as much as 21 during the opening 20 minutes and shot 60-percent from the field and 65-percent from three.

Buena Vista made things interesting late in the game after falling down by 19 at halftime. With less than three minutes to go in the game, The Beavers stormed back and was only down by two, before Adam Reiter made a free three and Tyler Stumbo made a jumper to extend the lead back to five and it would never get any closer than that for the remainder of the contest.

Ben Rajewski scored his most points in four games and finished with 11 points, while Tyler Stumbo chipped in 10 off the bench.

Timothy Jeffries finished with a career-high 35 points for the Beavers.

GAME NOTES

The Storm earned their first road win at Buena Vista since 2012, snapping a seven-game losing streak in Storm Lake. Simpson never trailed during the game and there was a brief tie at 4-4, but it lasted nearly 20 seconds before Riordan made a triple. Buena Vista had a 36-10 scoring advantage in the paint and had two more rebounds in the game.
