Simpson and Grinnell combine to set Division III free throw record

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Basketball fans attending the men's game between Simpson and Grinnell on Saturday, Dec. 14 got their money's worth, as 40 minutes of basketball was stretched into a nearly 2 hour, 30 minute affair thanks in large part to an NCAA Division III record 118 combined free throw attempts.

The previous record was 105 set by Oberlin and Earlham in 1992.

Grinnell went 45-for-54 from the line while Simpson went 47-for-64 in Grinnell's 156-150 win. The Storm set school records for free throws made and attempted while the 92 makes between the two teams was one shy of the Division III record of 93 set by Grinnell and Beloit in 1998.

The overall NCAA record for free throw attempts in a game is 147, set by Southern Indiana and Northern State (Division II) in 1997.

The teams combined to committ 76 fouls and six players fouled out, three from each team.
