Storm scare Coe but fall short

 Jim Glogowski Postgame Interview

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The last time it went to Coe, the Simpson football team trailed 42-0 after 30 minutes and never threatened the playoff-bound Kohawks.

A different team took the field Saturday, but the end result remained the same.

Preseason All-American quarterback Brad Boyle accounted for four touchdowns and defensive end Frank Weymiller had four sacks as Coe hung on for a 34-26 homecoming win at Clark Field on Saturday.

Despite another valiant effort by his team, head coach Jim Glogowski isn't satisfied with moral victories.

"I'm not into moral victories and I'm dissapointed we weren't able to come up with a victory today," Glogowski said. "The bottom line is we had the ball with a chance to tie at the end of the game, but unfortunately we came up short."

Boyle ran for three touchdowns and threw for one more for the Kohawks (1-2). He finished 13-for-17 through the air and rushed 16 times for 85 yards and three touchdowns.

Taylor Nelson had another great performance for the Storm (0-3), completing 25 of 32 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. In the last two weeks, the sophomore is 56 of 83 for 619 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Nelson connected with Taylor Rogers on both touchdown passes, including a 71-yard pass and catch that tied the game at 20 early in the third quarter. Rogers caught five passes for 116 yards on the day.

"Taylor Nelson is really coming into his own," Glogowski said. "We are doing a nice job of throwing the ball around, catching it, and when we need big plays we are coming up with those as well."

Down 27-20 in the fourth quarter, Nelson found Rogers on an 18-yard fade pass in the endzone to bring Simpson within a point. The extra-point attempt failed, however, allowing Coe to take an eight-point lead after Boyle's third rushing score of the day.

Simpson's last possesion began with 2:02 to play at its own 20-yard line. A 12-yard reception by Michael Chia moved the chains once, but Weymiller's fourth sack of the day set up a 4th-and-16 play which resulted in Nelson's only interception.

"We gave great effort, we battled back, we responded score for score, but unfortunately it didn't work out," Glogowski said. "They have some talented kids and they are a veteran
team that's been to the playoffs. We have to learn how to adjust and be able to make
big plays when we need them and not beat ourselvs with penalties. When we do that, we'll be successful."

Penalties hurt the Storm on Saturday, as 10 flags cost the team 71 yards. Coe committed three penalties.

Chia gained 81 yards on 23 carries and Brad Vogel returned six kicks for 177 yards, including a 60-yarder that set up Simpson's first touchdown. Braden Everding led the team with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss. Mark Cronin and Brenton Minish each registered a sack.

James Gale scored the game's first six points with 38- and 31-yard field goals.

Simpson looks for its first win of the season next weekend when it travels to Dubuque to face Loras. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Rock Bowl.
