Bjorkgren steps down as head men’s basketball coach

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson College Head Men's Basketball Coach Brad Bjorkgren has announced he is stepping down from his position after nine years.

"After taking some time to evaluate and reflect on my future, I have decided to step down from my position of head men's basketball coach," Bjorkgren said. "I have dedicated the past nine years to Simpson Basketball, and I believe it is time for a fresh start and new direction. I would like to thank President Byers, Director of Athletics Marty Bell, Coach Brian Niemuth, and all the great people of Simpson College for the wonderful opportunity I was given to lead this program."

Bjorkgren '83 began his role as head coach in 2015-16, going 103-111 in his tenure. He led Simpson to the conference tournament in each of his first six years, including back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2019 and 2020.

"I would like to sincerely thank Brad for his dedication and loyalty to the Simpson College basketball program," Bell said. "From his days as a student-athlete through his coaching tenure, he has been a person who has demonstrated the highest level of integrity, character, and class. He was a great mentor and role model for many of our coaches and I personally will miss our many hoop conversations. We wish him and his family all the best, and he will always have a home here with the Storm."

Thirteen players earned 20 all-conference accolades under Bjorkgren, including three-time first team performers Sam Amsbaugh '18 and Conor Riordan '20. Amsbaugh garnered American Rivers Conference Co-Most Valuable Player recognition in 2018 and Riordan was named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy in 2020.

"I will be forever grateful to the student athletes, coaches, and athletic department staff for their support over the years," Bjorkgren said. "Moving forward, I am going to spend some quality time with my family while keeping an open mind to what the future holds. I plan to stay connected with Simpson College and all the outstanding people that make this place so special."

A national search for Bjorkgren's replacement will begin immediately.
