Steen earns conference player of the week award

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Ashlyn Steen of the Simpson College softball team was named the American Rivers Conference Softball Position Player of the Week, as announced on Monday.

The award gives the Storm their second straight week taking the position player of the week honor, after Alexis Ehlers won it last week.

Steen, earning her first career weekly honor, put together a magnificent offensive display, helping the Storm to a road sweep of Grinnell. The two wins at Grinnell extended the team's win streak to 12 games, with an overall record of 17-5.

The sophomore center fielder went 7-for-8 from the plate over the two games, including a perfect 5-for-5 in game two. Steen also drove in the game-winning run in the first game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

"Ashlyn is such a great player, as she can bunt, slap, and power slap for hits," said Storm head coach Brent Matthias. "She worked really hard in the off-season on her power swing and beyond being one of the fastest players in our conference and a stolen base threat, she is also a great defender in center field. She is a great leader, exciting to watch, and is really heating up playing her best ball as we enter conference play this week."

Steen also added three RBIs and a triple, while committing no errors in the two games. The Mount Vernon, Iowa native also leads the conference in hits (33) and triples (four), while not committing an error so far this season.

The Storm open conference play at home on Wednesday afternoon against Buena Vista.
