Simpson tied for 3rd after IIAC first round

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Zach Hale carded a 78 and Simpson posted a 329 to tie for third after the first round of the Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championship at a breezy Finkbine Golf Course on Friday.

Just five strokes separate the Storm from day-one leader Wartburg, which shot 324 to top the eight-team field. Central is second with 327 and Simpson is tied with Luther at 329, eight strokes ahead of fifth-place Dubuque.

Hale's 6-over 78 puts him alone in second place, four strokes off the pace set by Wartburg's Matt Kristensen. Trent Lindenman is tied for fifth after his opening-round 81.

Shaan Desai, Andy Hutchins and Conner Juilfs all carded 85 to sit in a tie for 16th.

The second round of the 72-hole tournament gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. as Simpson tees off with Wartburg, Central and Luther.
