Storm sixth at IIAC Championship after first round

STORM LAKE - Matt Spaulding carded a 5-over 77 on the first 18 holes of the Iowa Conference Championship on Saturday at Lake Creek Country Club, putting him in a tie for fourth after the first round.

Simpson sits in sixth-place after the first day, shooting a 328 to put itself four strokes behind Luther. Central leads the way (313), followed by Buena Vista (316) and Loras (319).

Spaulding is tied with Loras' Joe Leibfried after the first round of the four-round tournament. Sam Herrmann of Loras leads the individual race after shooting a 1-over 73.

James Montgomery, who finished fourth at last year's championship, is tied for ninth after firing a 7-over 79.

Conor Juilfs and Grant Northway are tied for 32nd (86) and Nick Tanner is tied for 39th (89).

The tournament continues Sunday when players from Central Buena Vista and Loras tee off at 10 a.m. Simpson, Dubuque and Luther will begin at 10:50 a.m. and Coe, Wartburg and Cornell get underway at 11:40 a.m.
