Hawkins named Academic All-American
INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson senior Nathan Hawkins earned a spot on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hawkins becomes Simpson's 40th Academic All-American in school history and the fifth from the football team. Storm football players have earned the honor three times in the past five seasons.
A computer science and computer information systems double-major with a 3.91 cumulative GPA, Hawkins averaged 40 yards on 53 punts and pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 21 times in 2018. The first team all-conference performer helped the Storm to a 7-3 record and a second-place finish in the American Rivers.
After missing the 2017 season due to injury, the Solon, Iowa native came back stronger than ever as a senior. He led the league and ranked 10th in Division III in yards per punt. The school-record holder for career punting average, Hawkins was also a D3football.com Third Team All-Region pick.
Thirty-four of the 51 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III Football Team -- including Hawkins -- maintain a 3.90 GPA.
