No. 1: Football upsets Wartburg in overtime
Nobody saw it coming.
Nobody that is, except for the men in the locker room.
Trailing by 17 in the fourth quarter on the road against No. 19 Wartburg (on homecoming, no less), it looked as though the Simpson football team would fall to 2-5 on the season.
But there was never a doubt on the visiting sidelines.
Following the lead of an emerging signal caller, a dominating wide receiver and a determined defense, the Storm came back. A touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor Nelson to receiver Taylor Rogers with 11 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 31, forcing overtime.
The Taylors hooked up again in the first overtime possession. After an extra point by James Gale made the score 38-31, the defense took the field.
Wartburg pulled within a point after a 4-yard touchdown run and was only an extra point away from forcing a second overtime.
Brenton Minish had other plans.
A good surge by the defensive line allowed Minish to block the point after attempt, giving Simpson a dramatic 38-37 win over the Knights, the program’s first since 1997.
